Join us for a conversation exploring an unexpected path into research, focused on engagement in research. Kelly D’Souza and Rae Martens will host a discussion with Dawn Richards, a trained analytical chemist whose diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis led her toward a career she never anticipated. Dawn will share her journey, speak about her work, and highlight resources to support your own engagement of people with living and lived experience in research.

Speaker

Dawn Richards has a PhD (Analytical Chemistry, 2000) from the University of Alberta, and has worked in a number of roles in the research community. Her diagnosis with rheumatoid arthritis nearly 20 years ago led her to combine her passion for science and make the most of her diagnosis. She founded Five02 Labs Inc to help people and organizations design and execute their patient engagement initiatives using leading practices and tailoring their approaches to meet their goals and patient partners’ needs. She has contributed to the literature and practice in patient engagement on compensation, authorship, recognizing patients as people with skills and who lead fulfilling lives, and training on patient engagement in research. Some of her current and past clients include Clinical Trials Ontario, the University Health Network, CIHR’s Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis, CIHR’s Institute of Infection and Immunity, and the SPOR Chronic Pain Network. As a volunteer Dawn is a member of the BMJ Patient Panel.
