QART trainees lead successful workshop on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
June 25th, 2020
On June 25th, 2020, QART trainees and many TACC members were delighted to welcome Dr. Lisa Willis, biological researcher from the University of Alberta, to speak on how to best implement Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in STEM research. She outlined nine different strategies meant to quell bias and discrimination in the workplace, some of which include hiring reforms, acknowledgment of individual biases, and the establishment of support systems among colleagues.
TACC is and always has been dedicated to ensuring a safe space for its staff and members. We are proud to report not only a diverse membership, but governing board. We still acknowledge, however, that there will always be work to be done, and are grateful to collaborate with knowledgeable and dynamic advocates of EDI like Dr. Willis.
- Attendees were provided with discussion time to analyze and practice strategies provided during the webinar on a realistic case.
- Attendees were provided with real evidence to show issues in EDI across STEM research and were provided with many different ways to counter this.
- Attendees learned the importance of listening and conducting research in order to be more inclusive and empathetic individuals in the workplace.
